The government said on Tuesday it has given the greenlight to the Forewind consortium for the next 2.4GW phase of its Dogger Bank offshore wind development.
The Dogger Bank Creyke Beck array comprises two 1.2GW projects with a total of 400 wind turbines to be located 130km off the Yorkshire and Humberside.
The Forewind consortium, which includes SSE, RWE, Statkraft and Statoil, expects a decision on a further two 1.2GW projects at the Dogger Bank Teesside A and B sites in August this year.
Head of offshore wind for The Crown Estate, Huub den Rooijen said in a statement that the sheer scale of the project creates the potential for it to be built at significantly lower costs, “presenting a powerful opportunity for economic growth and jobs”.
Energy secretary Ed Davey praised the project as “another great boost” for the region following plans announced by Siemens and ABP last year to invest £310 million to develop new wind turbine production and installation facilities in Hull.
