Bristol Water has pledged to make its planned new Cheddar Reservoir "even more important for biodiversity" than its existing site.
The water company said it would build and operate the facility with the lowest possible carbon footprint and minimise energy use.
Cheddar was identified last month as the preferred location for a new reservoir, out of 53 potential places in Somerset.
A new reservoir is part of Bristol’s Water Resource Management Plan to secure supplies for a population forecast to grow 36 per cent from 2007 to 2035.
