Greenpeace has launched a legal challenge to EDF's proposed new nuclear plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset.
The environmental lobby group last week lodged an application for judicial review of the government’s decision to grant consent for the project.
A spokesperson would not comment on the grounds for the challenge. However, it is expected to rest on the absence of “effective arrangements” for dealing with the nuclear waste that would be generated. Government plans for a waste disposal site in Cumbria fell through earlier this year after a local authority pulled out.
This judicial review comes hot on the heels of one from the National Trust for Ireland. It contends that the Irish people should have been consulted on the plans, given the risk of environmental damage to neighbouring countries in the event of a disaster.
