Heating water in British households is costing bill payers £6billion a year, according to a new report by the Energy Saving Trust.
The report, At Home with Water, revealed the “hidden element in household expenditure” adds £228 to the average household bill each year.
The study of more than 86,000 homes showed that showers represent a quarter of water usage in the homes, ahead of toilets (22 per cent).
The Energy Saving Trust also highlighted cutting one minute off the average seven-and-a-half minute shower would help cut annual UK energy bills by £215 million.
Three quarters of households still boil more water than they need when using the kettle, which is costing British bill payers more than £68 million a year.
Andrew Tucker, water strategy manager at Energy Saving Trust, said: “With legislation increasingly demanding utilities help consumers cut their bills, At Home with Water can provide the tools necessary to start making big changes to the way Britain uses water – one of our least-considered natural resources.”
