Taunton magistrates yesterday gave conditional discharges to two men arrested when bailiffs cleared protesters from a barn on the proposed site for EDF Energy's new nuclear reactor at Hinkley in Somerset.
Theo Simon and David Jesse of the Stop Hinkley protest group were evicted from the barn during a dawn raid on Wedensday. The group occupied the barn as part of a bid to stop development works going ahead.
Defending solicitor Matthew Graham told Taunton magistrates that both Simon and Jesse had maintained a peaceful occupation of the barn and had regular liaison with the authorities about what they were doing. The court accepted that they had offered no violent resistance and the two are free to join another Hinkleyprotest event planned for 10 and 11 March.
