Households close to new onshore windfarms are set to get up to a 20 per cent discount off their electricity bills.

The government is expected to announce a set of proposals tomorrow which will encourage communities to welcome the renewable developments.

As well as a discounted electricity bill, the benefits could also include local facilities or free home improvements.

Good Energy, which operates the Delabole windfarm in Cornwall, introduced a similar scheme to its customers in January this year, where customers living within 2km of the windfarm’s substation were eligible for a 20 per cent discount.

Government officials are understood to have been in touch with Good Energy in relation to the scheme and to get their advice to help develop its ‘community benefits’ paper.

It is hoped these initiatives will lower resistance to windfarms, while they could also be on new nuclear plant and fracking projects.
