Scottish Water took around 1000 calls from customers this weekend as youths set off fire hydrants across Glasgow.

Last week around 30 hydrants were set off as temperatures soared. That increased to around 100 incidences at the weekend, leading to a loss of water supply and low pressure for some households across the city.

Scottish Water staff have been attacked when responding to fire hydrant vandalism in the past, so left certain streets until late in the evening, when temperatures had cooled. “This meant some problems were not sorted out as quickly as we would have liked,” said Jim Hassan, Scottish Water’s operations manager. “”We apologise to customers who were affected by this but out staff’s safety is a priority.”
