Vandals could cost utilities more than any other sector this year according to a survey of managers.
Insurer RSA said ‘yob culture’ – which it defined as vandalism, petty theft, property damage and staff intimidation – cost British businesses almost £10 billion in 2011. Utilities were among the hardest hit, alongside construction and transport.
This year the insurer predicts that figure could rise by almost a third, although that was not borne out by utilities themselves: only around a third (37 per cent) thought the problem would get worse in 2012 due to the state of the economy.
