Interactive map shows carbon storage sites

An updated online mapping tool from the Crown Estate and the British Geological Survey (BGS) now provides detailed information on potential carbon dioxide storage sites.

The updates to co2stored.co.uk enables parties interested in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to find out about storage locations, their characteristics, and their storage capacity.

Stuart Haszaldine, professor of CCS at the University of Edinburgh, said: “The new feature on CO2Stored is a great step forward in making knowledge about UK geology beneath the North Sea available for investigating option for commercializing CO2 storage.

“All companies with subsurface expertise can now more easily access evidence-based knowledge which can make their evaluation of CO2 storage quicker and more accurate.”

This is the latest step in a five year development programme for the website, which was created as part of the £4 million UK CO2 Storage Appraisal Project (UKSAP), commissioned by and funded by the Energy Technologies Institute.
