Islington Council’s not-for-profit energy provider Angelic Energy has celebrated its first birthday by announcing all the electricity it supplies to homes is now 100% green.

The local authority-owned company today revealed all its domestic energy is now certified as being generated at UK-based renewable wind and solar farms.

In addition, it is celebrating its first anniversary by offering the Warm Home Discount of £140 to eligible customers in good time for winter

It opened its doors in October 2017 and now supplies energy to 2,600 homes.

The council claims Angelic Energy is a real and fairer alternative to the “Big Six” energy companies.

“We set up Angelic Energy as part of our drive to reduce fuel poverty,” said executive member for environment and transport, Cllr Claudia Webbe.

“Angelic Energy provides a real alternative to the ‘Big Six’ energy companies for residents across Greater London – saving them money with the added bonus of now offering 100% green electricity, which not even all of the ‘Big Six’ can offer their customers,” added Cllr Webbe.

“As we approach winter, there has never been a better time for people facing unaffordable energy bills to consider making the big switch. Some of our most vulnerable older residents will also be able to save a further £140 per year from 2019 with the Warm Home Discount scheme.”

The news comes as Nottingham City Council-owned Robin Hood Energy announced it is introducing a smartphone app for its customers.

The not-for-profit supplier, which was launched by Nottingham City Council in 2015, says the free-to-download app will allow customers to better monitor, manage and understand their energy consumption.

And last month, another London borough, Hackney Council announced plans to launch its own renewable-focused energy company.
