Water companies must be proactive in communicating with the public about combined sewer overflows (CSO) and river health, a senior figure at the Environment Agency has said. Dominic Shepherd talked to Utility Week about the shift in approach to CSOs - from Defra discouraging any mention of the subject in the media, to publicly accessible near real-time data on overflows. He called for companies to embrace the opportunity of compliance monitoring and craft a united message.
