This WWT webinar will explore use cases where collaborations and novel approaches to data analytics have produced innovations which support water company objectives.
The global use cases cover the full range of water company challenges, from increased customer expectations to asset investment strategies, the rising cost of water and wastewater management to regulatory and environmental concerns, to workforce issues. The event will also share insights on cross-sector collaborations and data sharing to develop sustainable catchment systems, which support and complement asset management plans, with the goal to meet AMP7 efficiency and performance challenges.
United Utilities will introduce its innovative catchment systems thinking approach, which is influencing the direction of travel for future investment strategies across the UK water sector. The approach uses internal and third-party data, cross-sector collaborations and a holistic viewpoint to identify the most innovative and effective investments to solve industry challenges.
Speakers
Jo Harrison, Director of Environment, Planning and Innovation, United Utilities
Jo will cover the River Petteril and River Wyre catchment projects, taking a deep dive particularly into using water company and third-party data to develop novel solutions.
The Petteril catchment project focused on water quality with the goal of reducing phosphates. It saw a year of extensive data collection, water quality monitoring and behaviour modelling, leading to interventions and investments entirely different than expected. The project resulted in a cross-sector collaboration with Nestle, which was seeking similar outcomes.
The Wyre catchment project focused on reducing flooding, employing three-dimensional flood mapping to identify novel approaches. The project saw collaborations with FloodRe, Co-Op Insurance and the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Esme Fairbairn Foundation.
The resulting catchment-based approach (CaBA) has won endorsement from the Environment Agency and has attracted backing from the UK’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).
Jo has worked for United Utilities since 1998. In her current role she is accountable for leading our environmental and asset strategy for the business for the next 25 years; including developing and strengthening the company’s approach to asset management, resilience, climate change and environmental regulation. She is a chartered member of the Institute of Water and Environmental Managers and a Chartered Environmentalist.
