Landis+Gyr strikes further major smart meter deal with EDF

Smart meter manufacturer Landis+Gyr has struck a major deal to provide EDF with a further 650,000 SMETS2 gas and electricity meters over the next four years.

The latest deal, announced today (25 January), is in addition to the initial order placed by the large supplier of 500,000 devices.

Landis+Gyr has been involved in the rollout since 2013. The company is under contract to supply 22 million smart meters in total and has already delivered around 12 million.

It has a number of deals with some of the largest energy suppliers in the UK, including one with British Gas for 12 million meters.

Speaking to Utility Week Simon Egan managing director UK, Ireland and Netherlands at Landis+Gyr, said: “I don’t want it just to be seen as another contract. It’s another endorsement that the smart meter programme is working well and there is more confidence in the market now around it. That’s where I feel it is and where it’s going.”

According to the latest statistics from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) more than 22 million smart and advanced meters were operating in the UK at the end of September 2020.

Christopher Dalley, back office, asset and revenue operations director at EDF, said: “Landis+Gyr’s expertise has meant that we can implement the best possible technology for our customers, and we are really pleased to continue our work with them over the coming years.

“This is essential for meeting our smart meter rollout targets and reducing customer emissions, as well as transitioning to a smarter, more intelligent power system, all helping towards Britain’s net zero targets.”

Egan further commented: “Landis+Gyr has a long and successful history of working with EDF, as well as other large-scale suppliers enabling the UK in its nationwide effort to reach the SMETS2 deployment target in 2025.

“We have now secured contracts to deliver a substantial proportion of the 53 million meters that are needed to make the government’s rollout ambitions a reality.”
