Leep Utilities secures contract with Canary Wharf Group

Independent distribution network operator (IDNO) Leep Utilities has secured the last-mile electricity network to serve the latest phase of Canary Wharf in London’s Docklands.

Leep, a multi-utility joint-venture between mid-market infrastructure investment manager, Ancala and real estate company Peel Group, said Wood Wharf is the most significant network the joint venture has adopted since its launch in May last year.

Wood Wharf is a new mixed-use waterside development in Canary Wharf comprising more than 3,300 homes and nearly two million square feet of shops, restaurants and community facilities over 23 acres.

The network is due to be kickstarted this summer with the provision of power to the 10 Park Drive and 10 George Street apartment blocks.

Leep’s existing network portfolio already includes MediaCityUK, the technology and media hub that houses the BBC and ITV in Manchester, and the Princes Dock on Liverpool Waterfront.

Independent DNOs like Leep, can adopt electricity networks that have been constructed by National Electricity Registration Scheme-accredited independent connection providers (ICPs) in return for a financial contribution. This cannot be offered by an incumbent DNO.

They can also work with developer appointed ICPs for the design and build of the network or if required, can recommend an ICP to a developer.

In addition to its existing IDNO licence, Leep is due to obtain an Independent Gas Transporter licence by the end of 2018, which will allow it to adopt gas networks. As well as electricity networks, Leep already owns and operates water insets and heat networks.
