Charges for utility firms and their streetworks contractors come into force today in the capital.

The lane rental scheme means Transport for London can levy charges on utility firms up to £2,500 a day for working in congested areas and at busy times of the day. The idea is to encourage firms to undertake streetworks outside peak traffic hours, reducing congestion.

TfL said its own works were not exempt from the scheme and that around 70 per cent of its own works were carried out at off peak times. That compared to around 20 per cent of utility works, it claimed.
