A £25 million upgrade project of the 2.3 GW Longannet power station in Fife has begun.
Scottish Power has started the four-month project on one of the coal-fired power station’s four generating units.
Unit three, which has a capacity of 600MW, is having a full replacement of its major boiler parts, including the pipe work, while the generator transformer, valves, pumps and motors and also being renewed.
There will be up to 650 workers on site during the upgrade procedure.
Neil Clitheroe, chief executive of Scottish Power retail and generation, said: “With the closure of Cockenzie Power Station earlier this year, it is vital that we continue to invest in major power stations like Longannet.
He added: “Beyond our investment in the station’s maintenance, we have also heavily invested in its environmental performance in recent years, meaning that the station will operate efficiently for many years to come.”
