May: UK will adopt all EU laws

The UK will adopt all EU laws into British legislation when it leaves the European Union, including all environmental rules.

Speaking at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, prime minister Theresa May told delegates the Great Repeal Bill will “convert the acquis” and transpose European laws onto the British statue book.

“By converting the acquis into British Law, we will give businesses and workers maximum certainty as we leave the EU.

“The same rules and laws will apply to them after Brexit as they did before.”

Environment secretary Andrea Leadsom backed up May when speaking at a fringe event. “We will affectively be nationalising the acquis, so we will be enshrining all the body of legislation into UK law.

“This is quickest, easiest, and for those who care about the environment the most smooth transition we could take.”

She added: “What that gives us is the enormous opportunity to shape UK laws what works for us and not 28 EU member states.”

Leadsom added that any changes to this legislation will undergo the “usual” parliamentary scrutiny, and that there is the possibility for the UK government to adopt and adapt EU targets.
