National Grid and Norway's state-owned energy firm Statnett are stepping up work on the proposed 1.4GW subsea electricity interconnector between the UK and Norway.
The firms today signed an agreement to continue working on the project. Once joint seabed surveys are complete, the companies will focus on obtaining permits and concessions for the 700km interconnector, before focusing on procurement.
The project, which will connect to Blyth substation in Northumberland, is one of two proposed UK-Norway transmission lines. The other is being investigated by SSE, Vattenfall and a consortium of Norwegian power companies.
It is not clear whether both links will be built.
