National Grid Electricity System Operator, SP Energy Networks and UK Power Networks have teamed up with Electron to build a “first-of-a-kind” register for generation and storage assets based around blockchain technology.
RecorDER will allow network operators to securely share information on assets connected to transmission and distribution networks using agreed industry standards.
The project, which is being supported by funding from the Network Innovation Allowance, will initially focus on collating data on assets with an installed capacity of more than 1MW. Subsequent phases will seek to add contractual data and integrate the register into various procurement processes.
Once complete, the team will attempt to enlist more networks operators with access to more data to further increase visibility over the energy system.
“Embracing new technology is essential to managing the energy system efficiently and RecorDER is one example of how we are working in partnership across the industry to identify new and exciting ways to work together,” said Carolina Tortora, head of innovation at National Grid System Operator.
“If successful, this register could lay the foundations for a robust GB-wide flexibility market across transmission and distribution, unlocking huge value for consumers and driving the transition to a low-carbon flexible energy future.”
Electron chief executive and co-founder Jo-Jo Hubbard said: “This is a great example of networks collaborating to deliver benefits to their customers. We are delighted to be working together with such key, forward thinking industry partners on a shared asset register.
“This is an important first step in the process of integrating distributed assets and allowing them to play their full role in balancing the electricity system.”
The creation of a shared asset registration platform was one of five key recommendations from a new report launched by the Energy Data Taskforce at the Utility Week Energy Summit last week.
