New 5,000 home smart meter trial in Scotland includes hard to reach areas

A new 18 month smart meter trial for 5,000 households including a number of hard to reach, rural locations, has been announced by Scottish Power and SmartReach.

The energy supplier has teamed up with SmartReach, a collaboration of Arqiva, BT, BAE Systems Detica and Sensus, to trial their smart meter technology in Glasgow and the ‘hard to reach’ Lochwinnoch, 20 miles west of Glasgow and part of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park.

The trial will use a single, long-range radio based network to communicate with the installed electricity meters and follows an earlier trial in Ipswich, which used the same system.
