Smartest Energy has launched a new 100 per cent renewable electricity product aimed at sustainable businesses.

Smartest Energy’s new offering has been certified by the Carbon Trust. It is the first product of its kind to be independently certified, according to the aggregator and business energy supplier.

Launching the product, Smartest Energy said it wanted to “give businesses confidence” in reporting zero carbon emissions from their electricity supply.

Smartest Energy chief executive Robert Groves said: “Supplying renewable electricity is a growing part of our business and we are seeing more and more of our business customers ask us for certificate-backed renewable electricity products.”

With an increasing number of businesses aiming for renewable energy and signing up to related commitments like the RE100, Smartest Energy aims to offer “the most transparent renewable electricity supply in the UK market”, he added.

It is “crucial” for sustainable businesses committing to zero-carbon and science-based reduction targets to “be confident in the provenance of the electricity they are being supplied with”, said Carbon Trust managing director, Hugh Jones.

“Organisations are trying to do the right thing but they need to have confidence in the level of assurance available for what they are buying. We are pleased to be working with Smartest Energy to bring the required level of rigour to the electricity market to allow companies to take more control of their emissions,” he added.
