Northumbrian Water cuts consumption with efficiency campaign

Northumbrian Water has made strides towards achieving its water efficiency targets with an 81,000 litre consumption cut in one town.

The company launched its Every Drop Counts campaign in Berwick-upon-Tweed in June and has told Utility Week that the 1,800 properties involved have so far seen an average reduction in consumption of 45 litres per day per customer. The campaign is due to continue until mid-October.

The project is providing Northumbrian Water with information on how to run and conduct water efficiency campaigns, and gives it data on how much water could be saved across its region as it aims for a 0.33 mega litre per day reduction in consumption, as set out in its water resource management plan.

In the campaign, Northumbrian Water has been working with the Berwick Community Trust and Crowder Consulting to offer free home audits to homes and businesses, and a range of water savings devices. This has helped customer save an average of £40 off their annual metered water bill.

The cut in consumption will also see Northumbrian Water benefit as a result of the lower energy and treatment costs needed as water demand falls.

Northumbrian Water demand planning project manager Clair Cooper said: “We take top quality tap water for granted but it is a precious resource and we need to do all we can to protect it.”

The scheme follows a trial of the whole-town approach in Wooler last year, which saw water consumption fall by an average of 50 litres per day per customer across the 500 properties involved.
