Northumbrian Water signs UK’s first offshore wind PPA with Orsted

Northumbrian Water has signed the UK’s first corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) for offshore wind with the Danish renewable developer Orsted.

The 10-year deal, which is an expansion to an existing agreement that began in April 2018, will see the water company directly buy almost a third of its renewable electricity – roughly 100GWh per year – from the Race Bank offshore windfarm.

“This PPA is not only a first of its kind in the UK; more importantly it aligns perfectly with our sustainability goals and our ambitions of creating a truly cohesive energy management strategy,” said Northumbrian Water group commercial director Graham Southall.

“The long-term stability this brings is fantastic for us, and great news for our customers and stakeholders, because it reduces operational costs without compromising our work.”

Alana Kühne, head of corporate PPAs at Orsted, said: “Northumbrian Water shares our ambitions towards a greener future and are able to benefit from this journey through signing a corporate PPA from Race Bank.

“For Orsted, this agreement is an important step towards building long-term green partnerships with corporate power customers.”

The Race Bank windfarm located off the coast Norfolk was commissioned by Orsted earlier this year.

The 100GWh of power that Northumbrian Water will buy annually corresponds to 23MW of capacity from the 573MW installation. The agreement will come into effect on 1 March.
