RWE Npower has sold two sites in Cumbria it had promoted for nuclear development in 2009, following a "strategic review".
The energy company had promoted the sites in Kirksanton and Braystones for potential nuclear development into the government’s Strategic Siting Assessment (SSA) process.
However, the government’s Energy National Policy Statement (NPS), published in 2011, did not include RWE Npower’s sites in Cumbria.
Following this, the energy company said it had chosen not to challenge the decision and “began looking at possible opportunities for the sites.”
In a statement the company said: “Following a strategic review, and in light of RWE npower’s decision in March 2012 to withdraw from new nuclear build in the UK, we have been exploring options for selling our land at Kirksanton and Braystones.
“Towards the end of last year we offered the current tenants on these sites the opportunity to buy back the land and we are pleased to say that agreements have been reached on all land at both sites.”
A spokesperson for Npower said the tenants had requested that their details were not made public.
