Npower has signed a deal with the communications giant BT to provide them with 100 per cent renewable power.
BT, which consumed 2.3 TWh of energy running its UK networks, data centres and offices (equivalent to 0.76 per cent of UK electricity demand) in 2011/12, will see a carbon reduction of about one million tonnes of CO2 per year.
Richard Tarboton, BT’s director of energy and carbon, said the deal shows BT are a “responsible and sustainable business leader”, while energy secretary Ed Davey added that he was “delighted” at the agreement.
Paul Massara, chief executive of Npower, said: “BT’s decision to match its electricity use with 100 per cent renewable energy sends out a real signal that renewables are important to the UK and to British business.”
