Two nuclear power stations have together passed the one million hours of operation milestone.

EDF Energy’s Hunterston B in Scotland, and its sister station, Hinkley Point B in Somerset, passed the mark this week.

Both of the plants, with a combined capacity of 1,760MW, started generating electricity in February 1976.

Colin Weir, station director at Hunterston, said: “We keep ticking off the milestones here at Hunterston as we continue to produce low carbon electricity.

“But to hit a million hours of production is some achievement.”

Hunterston B and Hinkley Point B were both recently granted extensions, which saw their operating lifetimes moved from 2016 to 2023.
