EDF Energy's designs for nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point C in Somerset and Sizewell C in Suffolk have been approved, it was announced today.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Environment Agency said the designs met regulatory expectations on safety, security and environmental impact. EDF Energy and its partner on the project Areva confirmed it is the first reactor currently planned for nuclear new build in the UK to complete the assessment process.

EDF said it was a significant milestone as it means the company can make a final investment decision for Hinkley Point.

Energy minister John Hayes welcomed the news, saying he was confident that nuclear new build in the UK will go from “strength to strength in 2013”.
