O2 to launch ‘digital life’ smart-home platform in UK

Mobile group O2 has signed a deal with AT&T to offer a “digital life” home management platform in the UK by summer 2016.

O2 will team up with AT&T which will provide the software for the platform, and smart thermostat maker Tado for the hardware.

The platform will offer a connected home service where customers will be able to manage central heating, home security and energy management under a single internet-based platform.

The smart-home platform will have two components – a hub and a smartphone app which allows users to control various areas in the house. The software will be able to learn from the household habits to ensure efficient energy usage. 

Devices offered will include smart plugs, cameras, intruder alarms, door locks and water and smoke sensors which will all link to the single hub and allow customers to manage them remotely and automatically.

Digital director for O2, David Plumb, said: “We are building an ecosystem that will deliver a complete smart home experience. By teaming up with the very best device, platform and service providers, we will be able to give people the smartest tech for their homes.

“We will use our O2 Gurus, with installation experts, to make it easy and simple for people to get the most out of that tech. With 25 million O2 customers in the UK, we’re excited to be using our scale and expertise to help customers get the everyday benefits of connected tech in the home.

“We are pleased to announce our collaboration with AT&T for their Digital Life platform which will integrate old and new devices around the home, and Tado for their truly smart heating control.”

The number of UK households with some form of smart-home system increased 30 per cent in 2015 to 4 million, according to Strategy Analytics, the research firm. The average smart-home spends £256 on the technology, it found, taking the market size to about £940 million.
