New data has revealed that more smart meters were installed in October than during any other month so far in 2023.
The figures from Electralink show that last month 230,000 smart electricity meters were fitted in Great Britain, with installations so far this year exceeding 2 million.
October’s figures are 14% higher than September and just under 5% up on October last year.
Electralink said the East of England had more than 29,000 installations – only a few hundred more than Southern England which recorded just shy of 29,000 installations. The East Midlands meanwhile had 23,000.
It comes as Ofgem recently revealed that six retailers agreed to pay out almost £11 million after failing to hit their installation targets last year.
Speaking to Utility Week following the regulator’s findings, Electralink’s chief executive Dan Hopkinson suggested the industry should collaborate more efficiently to achieve the rollout’s goals.
He said: “Is there a conversation to be had to say how do we start to co-ordinate the rollout? Could different retailers come together to look at the productivity challenge?
“In other words so we’re not sending five different installation teams onto a street at different times, especially in areas of low smart penetration, possibly there are geographies where it would make more sense to try and send a team into the area to do as many installs as possible. That would be a very different way of doing the programme than today.”
According to the latest government figures, more than 33 million smart and advanced meters have been installed in homes and small businesses across Great Britain, which represents 58% of all meters in the UK.
