Ofgem considers accepting SSE’s electricity connection commitments

Ofgem will consult on commitments from SSE following an investigation into anti-competitive behaviour in the electricity connections market.

The investigation into the large supplier began in January 2015 after concerns were raised relating to whether SSE used its position as a dominant distribution network operator to put smaller rival companies at a disadvantage connecting new development sites to the network.

SSE has agreed to put new processes and procedures in place to ensure consistency in its pricing and when identifying points of connection to its electricity distribution networks. Ofgem considers that these commitments meet the competition concerns that have been raised.

Since the investigation was opened, a new code of practice has been introduced to force companies to open up competition in the electricity connections market and the proposed commitments from SSE supplement the new rules.

Ofgem’s consultation will run for six weeks until 3 August and seeks views on the appropriateness of Ofgem accepting the commitments from SSE.
