Ombudsman Services, the watchdog for the energy sector, handled 26,760 energy complaints in 2013/14, 132 per cent more than the previous year and 67 per cent more than it had forecast.
The dispute resolution service expects this figure to increase significantly in the next financial year.
According to the service’s annual report, during 2013/14 energy companies were required to make financial awards in 76 per cent of the cases the ombudsman investigated.
Despite a significant growth in complaints about energy companies, only 5 per cent of the energy consumers who could refer their complaints to the ombudsman did so, due in part to a lack of awareness, the report said.
