Career history: Simon joined the Energy Technologies Institute in 2012, having previously held senior roles at Galliford Try. He is involved primarily in commercial and engineering infrastructure and investments.

What was your first job?

A paper round and working part-time on a market stall.

What are the best and worst parts of your job?

I love the challenge that comes with being part of an exciting, relatively new industry. I can’t really think of a downside.

What’s your dream job and why?

It would have to be a Formula One racing driver. I’ve always had a passion for fast cars and motorbikes.

What’s your most treasured possession?

My children (if you can call them possessions), memories of good times and some very old football programmes.

Where did you last go on holiday?

A relaxing family holiday in Turkey – plenty of sunshine.

In the Hollywood film of your life, who would play you?

Tom Cruise from Mission: Impossible. What a fantastic job, travelling the world and fast cars.

Reveal something about yourself not many people know.

I was cross-country champion at school – when young, fit and ten years old.

What album is currently in your car CD player?

Emeli Sande, Our Version of Events.

What’s your favourite film and TV programme?

A Good Year with Russell Crowe, and Spooks.

What quote or saying do you most overuse?

“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.”

If you ruled the world, what would you do first?

Introduce a minimum standard of living.

What’s your favourite joke?

A man walked into a bar. “Ouch!” It was an iron bar.
