Ovo announces closure of Boost

Customers of Boost, the prepayment meter (PPM) arm of Ovo Energy, are set to be transferred across to the Ovo brand later this year.

The company has confirmed the move is to allow its 200,000 Boost customers to benefit from Ovo’s new Path to Zero offer, unveiled at an event in London earlier this week.

Path to Zero is a series of measures that the company believes the UK needs in order to hit its net zero ambitions, with a warning that without significant change, the country is on track to miss its carbon targets.

One of the key announcements was that Ovo is to end the use of Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) certificates as part of a drive to end industry greenwashing.

Boost was created by Ovo in 2017 as a branch of the supplier which could focus attention on PPM customers.

An Ovo spokesperson said: “We’re ready to welcome our Boost customers to Ovo Energy where they will receive new, green benefits –  all free or at a discounted price.

“As part of our new Path to Zero offering, customers can receive energy insights, advice on how to reduce unnecessary energy usage, upgrade or improve their boiler, and use energy efficient technology.”

Ovo is additionally calling for a new kitemark system for the green tariff market as part of Path to Zero. This would help customers avoid greenwashing practices by clearly identifying the tariffs directly supporting decarbonisation or the generation of renewable energy.

It is also unveiling a new £10 million Green Skills Academy to help the UK tackle the green skills shortage, creating 15,000 jobs.
