Pamela Taylor, chief executive of lobby group Water UK, has warned that proposals for a non-domestic retail market could get mired in politics, with "disastrous" results.
The proposed market launch date, April 2015, is six weeks before the next general election.
Delivering the keynote lecture to CIWEM last week, Taylor said: “Why any government would want to see a successful industry that delivers not only for the protection of public health but also for the environment, the economy and society in general turned into a party political football is baffling.”
She was not convinced that market mechanisms would deliver significant benefits, but added: “In a scenario where climate change or population shifts have changed the amount of water available to meet demand, it is possible then that the economics of the situation would stack up.”
