The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) spent two years, from June 2014 to June 2016, investigating supply and acquisition in UK energy markets.
Initiated by a referral from Ofgem’s governing body, the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority, the CMA investigation aimed to uncover practices and structures that served to “prevent, restrict or distort” competition in the UK energy market.
The final report, on 24 June 2016, set out actions for the industry to take to address the problems it found.
These include: a temporary price control for prepayment meter customers; sharing between suppliers the data of customers on variable rate tariffs; and measures to commercialise price comparison websites.
The focus now, at end of 2016, is on implementation.
