PREMIUM: Greenhouse gas emissions in UK water

The water industry is one of the UK’s biggest consumers of energy, and as a result accounts for more than 1 per cent of the UK’s total greenhouse gases – five million tonnes a year. It is the fourth most emissions-intensive industry, behind energy, transport and manufacturing. The treatment of wastewater, and pumping water, are the two most energy-intensive activities.

This report analyses regulatory data to reveal the water sector’s performance on emissions, as well as the performance of individual companies.
