Plans to introduce more competition to the water and sewerage markets will move ahead in this parliament.
In the Queen’s speech today, written for her by ministers, the monarch said the government will move forward with plans to “improve the water industry”.
This means the draft Water Bill remains on the coalition government’s agenda and has moved another step forward.
The government’s agenda also includes the updating of the UK’s energy infrastructure, with the Energy Bill set to continue its passage through the House of Commons as it enters the report stage.
The bill cannot complete its passage through parliament soon enough for those in the energy industry.
John Cridland, the director-general of lobby group the CBI, said: “The Energy Bill’s journey has dragged on long enough – it is crucial for investors that it’s put on the statute books as soon as possible.”
The Queen also added that the government would use its presidency of the G8 to continue making progress in tackling climate change.
