Economist Dieter Helm has called for a complete overhaul of water regulation, a move to an integrated catchment approach, and widescale adoption of greywater storage at domestic and system-level. The cost of maintaining status quo, Helm warned, would be more sector crises that ultimately anger the public and lead to calls for an end to privatisation. He called on companies and regulators to act now to right the wrongs and future proof the system.
