RWE invests £12m to cut emissions at Aberthaw

RWE Generation is to invest £12 million in a new, low-emission boiler at Aberthaw power station in South Wales.

The installation of the £12m boiler is due to begin in the middle of next year. RWE is considering the installation of a further two boilers within the next four years.

The boilers are designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from the station by more than 60 per cent – the first step towards meeting the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), which comes into force in January 2016. The power station has been entered into the Limited Life Derogation to the directive. The LLD allows participating plants to operate for a maximum of 17,500 hours or until the end of 2023 before either closing or re-permitting to operate at new plant standards.

Roger Miesen, chief technical officer of hard coal, gas, and biomass at RWE Generation, said: “This is a really positive step to secure the future of Aberthaw Power Station beyond 2016, keeping our options open.

“It is a positive signal for jobs in Wales and across the Welsh mining community.”

He added: “However there is still more to understand regarding the longer term future of the power plant. We need to have long term clarity on how the energy market will operate under the Government’s new energy legislation, including the NOx Transitional National Plan, the capacity market, carbon floor price, and proposed changes to transmission costs (Project Transmit).”
