Scottish biomass projects scrapped

Three major biomass projects in Scotland have been cancelled as developer Forth Energy has pulled out of the schemes.

Forth Energy, which is a joint venture between Forth Ports and SSE, said it was not continuing with the renewable energy projects in Grangemouth and Rosyth.

Both projects had gained consent from the Scottish Government and Forth Energy said it is “investigating options to attract other developers to take the projects forward”.

The £325 million Rosyth project was granted planning permission by Scottish energy minister Fergus Ewing in January and was expected to create hundreds of jobs.

Forth Energy also withdrew its planning application for a proposed biomass plant at the Port of Dundee following an objection from Dundee City Council.

The news came after SSE announced it was scaling back its investment in offshore wind projects.
