Scottish Water awards Wrekin manhole cover contract

Scottish Water has awarded Wrekin Products a four-year framework to deliver manhole covers and surface boxes.

Wrekin’s unite manhole cover is included in the contract which was won through a competitive tender. Covers being deployed in areas of frequent access will also be fitted with Wrekin’s halo hinge.

The designer, manufacturer and supplier of specialist products for the civil engineering industry recently installed a “special edition” manhole cover for Thames Water to mark the first anniversary of the discovery of the 130-tonne Whitechapel fatberg.

The company was told it scored 95.03 per cent in the assessment of technical and practical details from Scottish Water.

Wrekin describes its unite product as a “well-proven cover”, which is already used in thousands of heavily trafficked locations by utilities including Yorkshire Water and Thames Water.

The company said the halo hinge, which will also be offered as part of the contract, enables users to single-handedly access the infrastructure below using standard lifting keys, only when it is safe to do so.

Simon Turner, sales director at Wrekin Products, said: “Our high-quality, innovative products which will help reduce maintenance costs and disruption, coupled with our Scottish warehouse and proven track record, enabled us to demonstrate we will provide an unrivalled service to Scottish Water.

“We look forward to helping Scottish Water provide an efficient and effective service.”

A Scottish Water spokesperson added: “We very much look forward to working with Wrekin Products Limited.”
