Scottish Water has been fined £1,000 for supplying tainted water that sparked complaints of a strange taste and skin irritation.
A malfunction of the sodium carbonate dosing equipment at Blairnamarrow water treatment works in Moray led to high pH water entering supply in October 2009.
The problem was exacerbated by a number of issues, including the suppression of a pH alarm and failure by staff to identify the root cause. It took four days to fully resolve.
The Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland said the company’s response was “delayed and inadequate”.
Scottish Water held an internal investigation and completed 30 actions to prevent a recurrence.
