Scottish Water provides £4.5m to cut charities’ water bills

Scottish Water is providing £4.5 million to help exempt or reduce water and sewerage charge for charities and sport clubs in Scotland.

The money forms parts of a £6.5 million initiative, run in partnership with the Scottish government – which is providing the rest of the money, to help registered charities and sports clubs with their water bills.

The new scheme, which comes into force from April 2015, will mean that charities registered with the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) and Community Amateur Sports Clubs, which meet the scheme requirements and which have an income of less than £200,000 will no longer need to pay water and sewerage charges.

Those with incomes between £200,000 and £300,000 will pay a reduced rate.

This replaces the old regime whereby the exemption was available to third sector organisations which did not pay for water and/or sewerage charges in 1999, or had an income below £64,500 (for 2013/14).

Applications for the new scheme can be made by third sector organisations from until March 2016 to receive help with their 2015/16 water bills.

The Scottish government’s infrastructure secretary Keith Brown said: “The new water and waste charges exemption scheme means eligible charities with an income of less than £200,000 will no longer have to pay anything – meaning more of their money can be used to support the valuable services that they provide.”
