A £130 million water treatment works just outside of Edinburgh went into service today.
Glencorse will supply around 175 million litres of water per day (175 megalitres) to 450,000 people in the city and parts of Midlothian. It uses gravity to flow water from the reservoir to the plant, has grass roofs and has a hydro turbine to generate a third of its electricity on site.
Black & Veatch said the scheme, in which pipes were manufactured onsite to save carbon and construction traffic was cut by three quarters by reusing excavated earth for landscaping, came in on time and under budget.
