Sutton and East Surrey Water (SESW) plans to move into the Scottish business retail market to help prepare for market opening in England in 2017.
The firm has applied for a licence to extend its service offering to Scotland and said it hopes to gain “invaluable experience” in the existing competitive market before the market opens for non-household customers in England in April 2017.
In its half-year financial results, SESW said ensuring it is ready for the opening of a competitive market has been subject to increased Board scrutiny in the last six months.
“It is clear that awareness of the planned changes in the market is still low among business customers and much work is needed to raise understanding of the options that will be available to them,” it added.
The firm reported an operating profit of £10.4 million, a £0.6 million drop on H1 2014.
The small decrease was largely due to an increase in operating costs increased of £0.8 million to £21.1 million because of higher manpower costs and the costs associated with the Open Water programme.
The company has invested £8.6 million in H1 2015/16, in what it described as a “determined start” in delivering the capital investment programme for the new five-year regulatory period.
