Severn Trent has announced it will build a new 13 million litre underground reservoir to supply customers in Nottinghamshire.
The £5 million project is being built on land near Diamond Avenue in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and will replace the existing reservoir in the same area.
Once completed in 2020 the new reservoir will serve more than 30,000 customers.
Richard Evans, project manager, said: “Service reservoirs are the unsung heroes of our business – they hold millions of litres of treated water to ensure our customers have our wonderful water whenever they need it but hardly anyone knows that they’re there.
“It’s important to us that, once we finish building it, the new reservoir will merge into the landscape and just quietly get on with the job that it’s designed to do without local people having to think about it.
“As the local population continues to grow, we decided that now was the right time to upgrade the Diamond Avenue site to provide a far more resilient water supply that we can easily maintain. It’s all about us making sure our supply is fit for the future.”
Speaking at Water UK’s City Conference in London in March, Sir John Armitt, chair of the National Infrastructure Commission warned the water sector that the cost of building new reservoirs is “peanuts” compared to the potential economic loss a drought would cause.
