Severn Trent fined over pollution incident

Severn Trent Water has been fined £10,000 after pleading guilty to a pollution offence in Nottinghamshire.

The water company was also ordered to pay £2,659.63 in costs at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

In March 2012, Severn Trent reported that it had discharged pollution into the Potwell Dyke watercourse in Southwell from its combined sewer outfall.

While the water company is permitted to discharge into the Potwell Dyke during storm conditions, at the time of the pollution, weather conditions were dry.

Investigating Environment Agency Officers witnessed dead fish and established that ammonia levels were elevated in places as far as 2km downstream.

An EA spokesperson said: “Although Severn Trent Water reported the discharge to us immediately, it was too late to prevent the pollution of the Potwell Dyke. We do everything we can to protect the environment, local rivers and watercourses. This case sends out a clear message that we will not hesitate to prosecute as necessary when environmental damage is caused.”
