SGN has said it is carrying out a "full investigation" into the cause of the gas leak on Saturday night in Penge in South London which caused 150 people to be evacuated from their homes.
SGN said it is “too early” to say what caused the leak on the pipe which is involved in ongoing repair work on a broken gas main in Penge Lane by the company. Work had been suspended over Christmas.
The pipe has now been permanently repaired, SGN said.
The leak was reported at around 10:30pm Saturday evening by a member of the public via the national gas emergency number.
Four reception centres housed the evacuees overnight and residents were allowed to return to their homes at 5am the next day.
SGN said the site has been “monitored regularly” as complex repair works have been carried out at two separate locations in the area since the summer to ensure the safety of the public.
A spokeswoman for SGN said: “We’d like to apologise for the inconvenience caused during Saturday’s night evacuation”.
“Due to the complexity of the work required, we’ve had to undertake the two jobs consecutively which is why we’ve had a presence in the area since the summer.
“Throughout our work we’ve aimed to minimise its impact.”
Work on Penge Lane has resumed today.
