Siemens and cable manufacturer Prysmian have won a £1bn contract for a subsea transmission link betwen England and Scotland. The link, which will be longest 2.2GW capacity high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable in the world, should be operational by 2016.
That will allow up to 6GW of renewable power in Scotland to be transported into England, from Ayrshire to the Wirral.
National Grid and ScottishPower awarded the contract. National Grid executive director Nick Winser said using the latest technology would ensure the “benefits for consumers and generators… will be felt for years to come.”
Ignacio Galan, chairman of ScottishPower said the link was “vital”. He reiterated that ScottishPower would invest £12 billion in the UK “over the course of this decade”.
