EDF is making a "significant number" of job cuts at the Hinkley Point C site. The utility said it is "refocusing its activities" at the site because most of the preparation work that is needed prior to construction has been completed.

There are currently more than 800 employees and contractors working on the site for the proposed Hinkley Point C nuclear plant, whose jobs are now at risk.

A spokesman for EDF said they are still committed to the project but they are following “normal project management process” and “temporarily slowing down work” on the site.

Gary Smith, GMB Union national secretary for energy, said the job cuts were an “absolute disaster”.

He added that the UK government is “playing hard ball” over the strike price negotiations, but warned EDF is willing to walk away from the project if a viable deal is not agreed.

A spokesperson at the Department of Energy and Climate change (Decc) said “progress is being made on the decision (strike price) and both sides want to reach an agreement”.
